You are invited to join Appalachian Independence Center at our inaugural Pathways to Possibilities: A Disability Awareness Event on Monday, October 5, 2026 from 11:00-3:00 at the SWVA Higher Education Center!
In Partnership with Emory & Henry University School of Health Sciences, AIC will welcome you to step into an immersive experience where participants navigate an accessibility course. Using manual wheelchairs, you will experience different surfaces, maneuver tight corners, and overcome other obstacles. This hands-on activity builds awareness and insight by exposing you to real-world architectural barriers and highlights the importance of universal design and access for all.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore the accessibility course and visit with our community partners to participate in other disability awareness activities and learn information about the services they offer.
Food trucks will be available on site for lunch!
But that’s not all! We have also joined forces with the SWVA Higher Education Center to create a collective “Community Wellness Day.” The Community Wellness Day will combine AIC’s Pathways to Possibilities event with a Healthy Aging Fair and Information Sessions throughout the day.
AIC will be conducting a breakout information session at 1:30 to discuss accessibility in our homes, communities, healthcare, and at work.
Visit swcenter.edu/wellnessday to learn all about the Community Wellness Day and the speaker sessions that will be occurring throughout the day. Join us for a day of health, resources, and connection for all ages & abilities.
